Restoring Andante to her former glory was a six-month odyssey of dedication, skill, and unparalleled craftsmanship. The project began in late 2023 at the renowned Orust Yacht Service in Henån, a boatyard typically reserved for sailing vessels but eager to take on the challenge of reviving a Storebro 38 Royal Cruiser Baltic with such a unique history.
The process started with teak expert Svenne Manfjärd removing the old teak deck, revealing areas of rot beneath. With over 50 years of experience, Svenne painstakingly replaced the plywood underlay and laid a new teak deck, complete with detailed seams and a polished finish. This work alone spanned several months, culminating in March 2024.

Passion and craftmanship
The restoration of Andante’s mahogany interior was equally meticulous. Craftsman Jörgen Gustavsson lacquered every surface, applying layer after layer in dust-free conditions to achieve a silk-like finish. New edge strips were added where needed, ensuring the boat retained its original elegance.
The textiles onboard received a modern yet retro-inspired update, blending nostalgic shades of beige with practical functionality. The final touch was new instrumentation, including advanced navigation tools, a modern sound system, and fittings that respect Andante’s classic character.

In total, nearly 3,000 hours of expert labor were devoted to the project. Carl Johnson, the boatyard’s manager, highlighted the challenges of working on a vessel of this age: “Older boats require specialized solutions… There are some things you just can’t rush”.
Andante now stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of Swedish boatbuilding, a seamless blend of 1970s nostalgia and modern reliability. Her journey back to the sea is proof that even legends can be reborn through passion and craftsmanship.
